The sea Turtles and project TAMAR-IBAMA
     The sea turtles are surviving the great changes of the Earth from the remote time of the dinosaurs the more than 110 million years, according to Ren Hirayama, paleontologist and teacher of Geology of Teikyo Heisei's University, in Japan, that revealed the discovery in the municipal district of Santana do Cariri, interior of Ceará-Brazil, of the oldest fossil of the reptile of just 20 cm of length and very similar anatomy with the current fossils. Until the end of the decade of 70, practically there was not in Brazil any work of marine conservation or environmental.

     The sea Turtles were victims of constants attacks: destruction of nests, slaughter of the females and “robbery " of you spawn, they were included in an extinction list of threatened species elaborated by old IBDF.

      Starting from this first understanding, it was created in Brazil the project TAMAR-IBAMA in 1980 with the objective of avoiding the extinction of this species of genetic and ecological importance, because it is an animal that went by incredible adaptations from its origin and necessary for the maintenance of marine ecosystem.

     The projeto TAMAR-IBAMA exists more than 24 years and it develops research works, protection and conservation of the sea turtles. From this period, they are already born more than 5.000.000 of a little sea turtle in Brazil about the help of TAMAR-IBAMA. They have 20 bases spread by 8 Brazilian states, protecting more or less 8.000 Km of beaches: Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
      The project is sustained, mainly, for coming resources of Petrobrás company, official sponsor of the project the more than 20 years, Ministry of the environment of Brazil, sale of products of the brand TAMAR-IBAMA (shirts, bonnets, bottoms, key rings) and through the ecological tourism.

     This kind of tourism happens in the visitor centers that in general are structured with tanks of observation of sea turtles, fence of incubation of eggs, aquariums , auditorium, room of video and exhibitions, shops, bars, coffees, restaurants and events as the race of the young sea turtles, that it was born in the bases of the TAMAR-IBAMA, for the ocean.

     In our coast from Bahia, 5 bases exist: Arembepe, Praia do Forte, Costa do Sauípe, Sítio do Conde and Mucuri. The base of the Praia do Forte is the national thirst of TAMAR-IBAMA and it receives every year a flow of more than 50.000 visitors, being in its Brazilian majority (± 90%). This center shelters the largest number of you spawn of the Hawksbill (Eretmochelys Imbricata) one of the more globally threatened. The base of Arembepe was created in 1984 and it was called base of Interlagos (shut condominium among natural ponds in the area of Arembepe) in function of all protection action to the reptile to have been begun by the inhabitants of the place in the 4Km of beach in front of the condominium. 4 of the 5 species that happen in the Brazilian coast spawn in the area administered by this base that it add 1200 spawn approximately or the birth of 90.000 little sea turtles for station that is going from September to March.
The project TAMAR-IBAMA develops a work of environmental education in its
visitors' centers.
